Write in the Door: Principles of Successful Personal Statements

Learn how to write convincing and persuasive personal statements for graduate school or a professional program admission.

Overview

If attending graduate school or a professional program is part of your future plans, this workshop will introduce you to a key part of your application: the essay. We will explore how to make your statement do the work it needs to do, and read a variety of sample essays to get a sense of “what’s possible” in this high-stakes genre. We will also discuss strategies for getting started and for making the most of the revision process. Finally, we will have a chance to apply the principles we’ve learned by engaging in some in-class writing.
