You may call our friendly and knowledgeable telephone staff at 608–263–1992 to make an appointment for individual instruction or ask questions about our services.
Students also can make, cancel, or reschedule a face–to–face appointment at the main Writing Center. Find out more information about our online scheduler by clicking here.
Please note, that telephone service is only available during limited hours; outside of these times you will hear a recorded message that provides basic information about the Writing Center.
What we can do over the telephone
Our telephone staff can assist you by making an individual appointment or by answering general questions about the services the Writing Center offers.
What we cannot do over the telephone
Because our telephone staff are not writing instructors, they will be unable to answer questions about writing (even quick ones!). If you need assistance with a writing project, call and ask for an individual appointment, or find out about instruction by email.
While our telephone staff can provide information about workshop registrations, we now use an entirely web–based registration system. To register for a Writing Center workshop, go to our list of workshops and follow the link for the workshop you’d like to take. If that workshop requires registration (and most do), the page will contain a brief registration form for you to fill out.
The Writing Center telephone number and hours
The Writing Center’s telephone number is 608–263–1992.
When classes are in session, the Writing Center’s telephone is staffed during the following hours:
- Monday through Thursday: 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. (Week 1 – Week 3)
- Monday through Thursday: 9:30 a.m. – 6:15 p.m. (Week 4 – 15)
- Fridays: 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (all semester)
- First three days of Finals Week: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Please note that if you call this number at any other time, you will hear a recorded message with basic information about the Writing Center.
To cancel an appointment by telephone
To cancel an appointment when the reception desk is staffed, please call 608–263–1992. When needing to cancel when the reception desk is closed, it is preferred that you cancel through the WCOnline scheduling software so the opening is indicated immediately and other students can reserve the slot. If you must cancel, please do so at least 24 hours in advance to allow enough time for another student to use the appointment.
General questions about services
If you have questions about any of the Writing Center’s services, please send email to email@example.com. You can expect an answer within two business days.
To make or cancel an appointment, please call the Writing Center—currently, we can neither accept nor cancel appointments via email.
To ask grammar, punctuation, citation, or other writing questions, please use the Writing Consultant form.
Workshop registration or cancellation
To register for one of the Writing Center’s workshops, go to the web page for the workshop you’d like to take and fill out the registration form. You should receive a confirmation of your registration within a couple days. We will also automatically send a reminder by email 2 to 3 days before the workshop meets for the first time.
If you have questions about our workshops, you can write to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you find you can’t attend a class for which you’ve registered, please cancel your registration.
Questions about writing
If you have specific questions about a paper you’re writing, and would like to receive an answer by email, you may Ask the Writing Consultant. A Writing Center instructor will reply to your question within two business days.

Submitting a draft online for an email response is an option you should explore. Of course, email instruction may not be right for every paper or every student, so please read our information fully.
