If the deadline of your draft is flexible, if you’d like to take a break from your draft while you wait for instructor feedback, or if all of our main schedule appointments are full, you might consider making a Flexible Feedback appointment!
WHAT IS FLEXIBLE FEEDBACK?
If you choose Flexible Feedback, you will receive feedback on your draft in the form of written comments and suggestions for revision, much as you would in a Written Feedback appointment. Once you have uploaded your draft, one of our instructors will review your writing, offer you feedback with your concerns in mind, and return your writing to you within 2 to 3 business days of your appointment.
MAKING AN APPOINTMENT
The Writing Center’s instructional services are now rolled into one platform–WCOnline! This is the platform where you will both make your appointment and retrieve your feedback.
Once you have signed in to our WCOnline scheduling platform, find the drop-down menu towards the top of the page, right under our Writing Center logo. Within that menu, select our “Flexible Feedback Fall 2020” option. This schedule will contain a series of white and green squares. You’ll want to look for a white square; this means that the slot has not yet been claimed. Click on a white square and follow the prompts to describe your project, its length, and what aspects of your draft you would most like to receive comments on.
UPLOADING YOUR DRAFT
If you choose Flexible Feedback, you will need to upload your draft and assignment information when you make your appointment (see upload boxes File #1, File #2, File #3 at the bottom of the appointment form). Uploading a draft immediately ensures that your instructor can respond to your writing as soon as they accept your appointment. Please note: to receive Flexible Feedback, your assignment will need to be uploaded in DOC/DOCX or RTF format.
OUR INSTRUCTORS’ RESPONSE
In the 40 minutes allotted for each Flexible Feedback appointment, our instructors are typically able to respond to about 6 typed, double-spaced pages. We encourage you to indicate which specific aspects or areas of your draft you’d like feedback on, especially if you have uploaded a longer piece of writing.
Once your instructor responds to your draft, you’ll receive an email notification that your appointment has been modified or that someone has responded to your writing. You can expect to receive feedback within 2 to 3 business days of your appointment slot.
WHAT SORT OF RESPONSE WILL I RECEIVE?
Your instructor will help you identify one or two areas for revision that can significantly strengthen your work. As in a face-to-face writing conference, our time is limited, so we will not be able to comment on every aspect of your draft in a single review.
WHAT KINDS OF PAPERS CAN I SEND?
Given the length of our Flexible Feedback appointments, we find that papers of up to 6 pages (double-spaced) are best suited to receive written comments and suggestions in a single session. If you submit a longer paper, please indicate where your instructor should focus their attention.
If you have a multi-stage project or a series of drafts you would like to work on, we direct you to our main schedule to set up a series of Written Feedback appointments or Virtual Meetings. We also invite you to consider a Writing Mentorship, or ongoing writing support with the same Writing Center instructor.
