Research on writing across the disciplines shows that instructors can enhance student learning and engagement by designing an interactive writing process. This workshop outlines concrete, effective, and manageable strategies for two activities in this process: (1) one-to-one conferencing and (2) peer review. We’ll discuss how to prepare for both activities and highlight best practices for helping students develop their ideas, identify areas for improvement, and plan revisions. We will explore other possible approaches, such as assigning writers’ memos to encourage critical, reflective thinking about instructor feedback on earlier drafts. Finally, we’ll look at successful models of this interactive process from across the university.
